I adopted a cat. It is the first time I have gotten a pet on my own without it being my families pet.

He is the best cat ever! Amazing eyes. Sleeps all day. Loves to look out the window. and LOVES to snuggle and smother your face.

free studio for me for 6 months

Excellent! A few weeks back I applied for Boise's Artist in Residence program. If you get accepted you get a free art studio space in the heart of downtown Boise for 6 months for free! The program is run by the Boise City Department of Arts and History and started just a few years ago.

I found out yesterday that I got a studio space...and in my friends' shop, Bricolage. I had no idea they were even participating in AiR! So now I get to hang out with two awesome ladies and work on my art. The room the studio is going to be in has two ceiling windows that look into the street above (because its underground).

I will be taking photos and documenting my processes over the next 6 months. I am just so excited I have a spot now to work on my bigger projects for my art show in June. I am even labeled through the city as an illustrator/installation artist. Insane! I gotta keep up and not let anyone down, let alone myself.

My friend invited me to her masquerade/ toga party for her 23rd birthday. I wasn't really into the idea of a traditional mask. I decided to round up a few friends and make our own theme of masks for the party.

I am not sure if you guys love Adventure Time as much as I do, but it is by far my favorite cartoon out there as well as the creator's other cartoon, Marvelous Misadventures of Flapjack.

There was even a pug at the party and his name was Captain Knuckles!

I am pretty proud of my Ice King costume, for making it the day before out of cardboard, some paper mache, and fabric.

Hey guys!

So, I finally got around to starting the album artwork for the band I am in, A Seasonal Disguise. I have had a few sketches here and there and some ideas... but I really didn't have anything solid. The album artwork is going to be intense. I have a lot of troubleshooting and planning to do, and basically inventing of buildings an space.

below are some little tiny snapshots.

I can't show too much because I really just started this thing. We have big plans for our new album and some ideas for merch I really hope I can make happen.

I have always felt comfortable with drawing and have never considered myself a painter. I just never got the training I needed to make myself feel better about it. I do paint with acrylic paints but with pretty flat coloring.

Anyways, I am continuing some work from my BFA thesis into my show in June. Graphite drawings of nursery rhymes that I like. My interpretation with my own characters and symbols.

sick days

I am not sure why my immune system is in the garbage, but I have been sick 3 times in 6 weeks and Thursday and Friday marked the sickest I had been in at least 3 or 4 years. This cold/sinus infection/flu/cat virus is really killing my attempt to go to social outings and my attempt to work on art for my show in June.

I also have a show in March now as well. Just a small, laid back thing with some local people I have never shown with before. Should be interesting and hopefully a good time. I mean, it has to be, right? The art show is in a pirate bar and we have a special from 7-9pm 2-for-1 beer special. woot woot!

I went to the flea market today. It was a complete bust. There weren't a lot of antique dealers or people selling "junk". I think I thrift too much to want to buy the stuff that people sell for outrageous prices when I just saw the same item for $1 at a thrift store. I was hoping to find some vintage valentines (which are easy to find, I just didn't want to drive out to any antique stores). Not a single person had valentines with it being so close to valentines day. WTF? What a complete bummer!

I bought 4 old photographs and got a huge crush on this sailor.

Then I bought a brooch that was a really suggestive looking peach, which, I actually have had a little obsession with for some time. At almost any Chinese restaurant you can find imagery of very large blossoms or peaches with very vibrant pink coloring.

"The longevity peach (shou tao) is not a fruit but a Chinese steamed bun in the shape of a peach, with lotus paste filling and coloured a bright festive pink. Traditionally, the shou tao is eaten at birthday celebrations of elderly folks where the buns are piled at least knee high on a tray.

Peaches are well known Chinese symbols of longevity and there is a Taoist story about the Queen Mother of the West who has a magical peach tree which bears peaches granting immortality to those who eat them. The tree however only bears fruit every three thousand years. The peach shaped steamed buns are made to symbolize those magical, immortality granting peaches. "

The brooch looks a lot like this, just pink.

I had enough time at work today to sketch out my idea for Bear Train. Now I just need to decide how large I want to make it, and if I want it strictly graphite, or to do a digital version as well.

I think I am going to get this printer for my graduation gift from my parents. I was going to have them buy my software for me. But this printer is something I would like now so that I can make prints of my work and sell them.

My brain is so numb at work, I get really excited about craft projects at work, like making a new tip jar.

I am pretty disappointed with the scrapbook paper stack I bought that has an adhesive back. The adhesive barely works and was falling off the paper within minutes of sticking it. It may be the curve in the cup as well, but it is still a disappointment.

Chad and I went to the old Idaho State Penitentiary for his birthday. Those inmates pooped in style.

I also got my book today! Rock Candy by Femke Hiemstra. She is by far one of my favorite artists/illustrators of all time. I really love that we have a lot in common with collecting antiques and plastic animals and toys. It shows in both her work and mine. While she is obviously an amazing painter and amazing at graphite, she is also very talented at pop surrealism. I like that she is doing her own thing with it instead of treading on Mark Ryden's heals like most do.

I also have a huge book on Henry Darger coming in the mail from my twin brother as a graduation gift. Yes!!!

Miss Kitty

I am cat sitting for my faux-sister, Leigh Ann, and I have had too much fun with her cat. Don't let the name Miss Kitty fool you, this kitty is a beefcake boy cat.

I also discovered that someone feeds the cat ice cream because when Chad and I were finishing off some ice cream we had bought, Miss Kitty came and was sticking his face in the carton!

Miss Kitty is oh so snuggly and also loves to meow at you early in the morning until you pick him up and snuggle him.

Mostly Muff

ya know, as in vagina. Working on a poster for my pals that are in the cover band, Mostly Muff, a band that plays once a year and this is the second year playing. Last year they played for Valentines Day and did 80s rock covers. This year it is 70s classic and glam rock.

My friend, Erin Cunningham, did a great poster last year of women with afros on their heads and afros in their panties. I am following the same vein and doing a crotch shot.

here are some sketches from first basic ideas to more detailed. They are pretty rough but that is how I like 'em. I may even just leave it at that or do one more version and then scan it into the computer and redraw it using my tablet.

I may add an arm into the equation. Still deciding on solid shapes or with an outline. Or hrmph.

antiques and things

I went to the Antique World Mall in Boise today for the first time. We spent 2 hours there looking at things. I had a $25 gift certificate from my good friend, Leigh Ann, I looked around and saw a lot of really cool things, cool toys and cool planters. I decided to be modest and only spend $12.

This is Drip and Drop and my cake topper deer named Socks.

BEAR TRAIN!!!! Oh my god, cutest thing ever but I didn't buy it. Instead, I want to make a drawing of it for my art show coming up.

I just really loved the pattern in this purse. Very inspiring.

I am the kind of person that is pretty self motivated but it helps me to make a list, even if I don't actually follow the list or actually physically mark it off, it is nice to see it and visualize it.

1. I have about 5 trades I am working on right now with people that I need to start/finish.

2. I have been thinking a lot about getting back into poster stuff and talking to a friend about paying him to screen print them for me... this could be a very good partnership in the future but I haven't talked to him yet so I won't mention his name yet.

3. Beer labels. I want to get some in my portfolio and I want to make labels for some really small craft brews.

4. art residencies. I have been thinking that if I can't move right away, it would be great to apply for residencies all over the US and get to live in other cities that way

5. Put on a really great art show with Rick Walter at the VaC in June. Get lots and lots and lots of work made. I want to really play with the space and work on some installations.

6. KITTY GLITTER. MUST START MAKING MUSIC WITH KAREN FOR THE BEST BAND EVERRRRR

College Graduate

Well, it is official. I graduated yesterday from Boise State with a BFA in Illustration. So, now I am officially not a student and now I need to start working even more on my craft and looking up illustration jobs.

Graduation was pretty rad because I got to graduate with old friends and new friends. Lots of great artists that once they get websites and blogs I will share them with you all.

The graduation ceremony ended with a clarinet solo and lots and lots of confetti. I felt like I was at a Flaming Lips concert, or maybe even a Polyphonic Spree concert.I have noticed that this holiday season feels different. Folks aren't being as friendly anymore and no one has put lights on their house. I have had some of the rudest customers ever in all of my 4 years at my work in the past 2 weeks. However, I found that if I draw them and make fun of them in illustration I feel a million times better. Just draw it out, man.

only 2 weeks left till I graduate. WHOA DUDES. Pretty excited to get the hell away from BSU and work on my own projects even more and prepare for other stuff.

Here is an illustration I did for Boise Weekly. Not sure when it is going to print.

I am having a lot of fun getting these requests for illustrations because I am working on ideas and concepts I probably wouldn't have thought about illustrating on my own--like nuclear energy!

The portfolio show was an interesting one to say the least. I got a lot of good feedback and bottle-necked the path people were making to each person. Haha. Still have a ton of postcards left and some buttons.
PS. Thanks to all of the professors and art students who showed up to our show to show your support. Oh wait, just kidding. None of you came. Glad I am getting the f#$k away from you all. :)

Here is a sneaky-peaky at my portfolio book that I set up and then got printed at lulu.com. I am 90% satisfied with my book. A few images printed really weird and I am really not sure why. Kinda jagged and then the halftones in one poster didn't show up at all and made weird geometric shapes instead.

and then, here is a character of mine on the window of Flying M Coffee in Boise. My friend, Rick Walter, and I are painting the windows for the holidays. Should be a fun one that maybe some will frown at. Hahaha!
Rick was nice enough to come and finish my character for me because I was working all day today. Tomorrow we are going to finish it up!
PS. Rick and I are also having a split show together at the VaC in June and July.

On Monday I am meeting up with a photographer to take photographs of my BFA show, One Trick Pony. I was mentioned in a review from Boise Weekly that you can read here. Now I am gearing up for my portfolio show--I have my tote bags in the works, my postcards and business cards sent off, my portfolio en route to my house, and my buttons being sent off soon. Whew! So much to do and so little time.

I am also working on an illustration for the Boise Weekly about hot springs. I haven't been to a hot spring in forever! I miss Burgdorf Hot Springs.

Also, I graduate soon! December 17th at 10 am is when I walk the line. Oh my goodness, am I excited!

A much needed update

Whoa, dudes. It has been a kind of crazy and hectic summer. I have a lot of work to put up on here-- shirt designs for Built to Spill, illustration for Boise Weekly, 8 paintings from a group show I was in, and a few other things I worked on. I am mid-process of working on a painting for the group show, A Monster in the Cupboard at Flying M Coffee in October, and a custom Munny show at the Record Exchange in October.

I just started up my last semester of school. I am having a senior show and a portfolio show. Chaos will ensue and I know I will become a hermit for the next few months. For my senior show, I am illustration Mother Goose Nursery Rhymes. I have finished the first rhyme, Jack and Jill. I am currently working on Humpty Dumpty.

I am planning on Little Miss Muffet, What are Little Girls and Boys Made of, 5 Little Piggies, The Cat and the Fiddle, Bat Bat, and a few others.

Oh man! The semester is finally over. I took my very last literature class EVER (I think?) and I think wrote my last paper for school ever. YES! I have one semester left and I am done for now. One semester left before I can travel more, apply for more artist in residence programs, have art show, play more music, move out of my parents' house and move away and try new areas. Sigh. I am so happy about this.

I have been sketching a lot of people but I was too distracted to sketch much of anything else this semester. I am pretty excited for more exploration of what I used to draw. The strong-man sketches are for a new freelance job and I am really having a fun time with those. Should be great to see how they turn out.

I am pretty excited for my grades this semester. I am really hoping for all A's. I also got an art scholarship for next year, it is just too bad I will only get to use half of it.

After a few drinks at a DLO event, local artist, Grant Olsen and I began to sketch together a bit.

Here are collages I made for my digital tools class. I am going to try and be modest here... but I thought my collages were the best. I get really sick of seeing art students turn every art project into some commentary-on-some-social-issue-that-every-art-student-has-made-art-about-ever. BLAHG. No, I don't give a crap about your dramatic and unconvincing collage about how America is self serving. We already know this, move on.
These are about space and instead of viewing the universe as outerly expansive, to think of it the other way--space, time, and the universe in confined spaces. Infinity is not just larger than life, but also smaller than life as well.

And then this is where I left my Grizzly Bear illustration. I would really like to see more music magazines rely on illustrations of bands instead of photos. Maybe that is too expensive for them though.

working on an illustration of Grizzly Bear. I had a bunch of ideas for this, but ultimately made the jump to this one to see if I could make it interesting. The combined heads are a symbol of how the band works. They all give input to the music. Each person writes songs and gives ideas on mixing the music.

This has a long way to go. I keep changing my mind on colors and how saturated the colors are. There will be more updates in the next few weeks.

I've been trying to work on some quick sketches of musicians I like. My focus for class this semester is to work on music editorial type illustration. The sketch below is of Victoria Legrand from Beach House. I drew into my Moleskin and then scanned it into the computer and colored it there.

It isn't the most solid drawing, but it is getting there... I think.

I created a promotional postcard (not the kind you send out, but the kind you leave places) for Boise Rock School. The little illo took me forever. The hand done font is by Ben Wilson from his logo he created for them.

I started this much much too long ago. But I think it turned out great and is very eye catching! Let me know what you think.

Also busted this out last minute for The Very Most (I did their album art recently) and now I have done their shirt design. Jeremy--the same chap that created my website--wanted a simple line drawing of his toy piano... but I took it a bit further and thought textures would be really neat.

But come January, things will change drastically. Julia Green, local Boise State illustration student and concert poster artist, will premiere her new show "Wild Wilderness." Green already has a few sketches for the show up on her blog at juliagreenillustration.blogspot.com, and the vibe seems to be Precious Moments meets the death of Bambi's mom. Her cartoonish illustrations of prancing acorns, regal owls and gasping trees speak to the majesty of the forest, all the while acknowledging the wild and unpredictable temperament of the natural environment. A Year With The Very Most

Andy, a great illustrator and designer and new pal from Wirestone took me over to the Library! Book sale today. He scored big on a boyscout songbook that had the neatest illustration on the front with the best color pallet.

I just really loved the font and colors on these two. Very inspiring as far as design goes.

Don't be fooled- the cover is really great but the inside only had a few illustrations and none were in color.

I didn't scan the cover, but it is a Children's Classics book with all kinds of goodies. My favorites were from Wizard of Oz.

This book is all about sex. RAD.

I am working on a fun little illustration for my first assignment in Illustration 3. I am doing a poster for a show that is supposed to happen in October at the VaC for the band The Daredevil Christopher Wright. It hasn't been officially announced yet, but I still want to do the poster. I decided to work in a style reminiscent of old children's book illustrations like Richard Scary. Or new artist like Meg Hunt. I love her work so much.

see if you can tell what my plans for the poster are.... they involve an old fisherman and sharks.

ps. I am about 5 full pages of sketchbook behind in updating this thing. Expect an update tomorrow.

I never draw pinups and really, am quite tired for seeing naked women on gigposters. That was such a Kozik thing back before 2000, so let's move on, shall we?

But, I thought it would be funny and appropriate and also a little ironic to use a pinup for this poster. The bands playing the show are indie-pop-folk etc bands so... this just seems ridiculous.

Sorry about that last post, folks. I didn't mean to sound so stressed or bitchy. I am still stressed but I have some AWESOME friends. My friend James Lloyd agreed to take one of my poster jobs and then my friend Brent said he could find someone else to work on his album artwork and that I could do his another time. You two are saints. Lil angels that don't live near me at all which makes me so sad. So so so sad.

I still have a lot to do. I got another poster added to my stack. That leaves 4 to make, luckily one isn't due for a while because the show is in the beginning on October. The others, though, are due very soon. As well as a custom linocut for packaging of local music being sent out to a ton of independent record stores across the US. I also have a my shirt design to do. The first idea was rejected and now the theme is something completely different, that quite honestly I am struggling with. So I am not forcing myself to do it tonight.

I need to finish my bedroom move. I got my dresser in and now I need to throw so so so much away. YUCK.

I drew the fabric hanging from Chad's ceiling on a rainy morning at 8am while he was at work. There was the loudest thunder and lightning cracking over his metal sheeted house.

A Seasonal Disguise went on a mini tour this weekend to Portland and Seattle. I wish there would have been more people, or more young people at our shows. We didn't sell a whole lot of merch- 2 of the new shirts, 2 of the old shirts and 2 cds. But, we have a large amount of shows coming up-hopefully that means we will get to sell more shirts.

I drew Karen and Zach before we played in Seattle. They were being all smoochy and cute with each other.

Still been thinking about what I want to do for an art show. I still really want to focus on the mysteries and wilderness of the pacific northwest. So, I have been doing some sketches for that. I got 2 large canvasses w/frames at the thrift store that I plan on gessoing over for my own work. SCORE. They cost me $22 total.

Howdy! I was over at the gigposters.com forums checking out the new artwork forum members were posting and pretty much had my mind blown by a painting by Johnny Crap. Johnny has really really f*cking good painting skills (and drawing) that make me so jealous. He has it mastered and it works so well for his paintings.

Normally, I don't like skulls. But this little character is so well rendered and adorable/badass that I can't help but love his little candy face.

Musical Saw

I decided while watching the Portland band, Musee Mechanique play a few weeks ago, I wanted to play the musical saw. I don't know anyone that plays it in Boise AND I don't have to memorize chords and hand positions, etc. I use my ear to determine what will sound amazing with what is being played and what is coming from the saw.

Been busy trying to get photoshop onto my computer. I eventually broke down and just put on photoshop cs. I forgot how dated it looked.

I've been pretty busy with another project for the Gorgeous Hussies. 2 down, 2 more to go. I've also been working on album art for Indicater Records, a tour poster, a band bio/package being sent out to record stores and labels and whatnots, and a shirt design!

Yes. Yes I am. I work for over 5 hours on a linocut and we are still doing the printing. I also have 2 album art projects coming up and a shirt design. Hopefully I will have a huge ass post about all of those when they are finished. You will be seeing sketches from those projects below.

I wish it were daytime so I could take a better photo. The colors are completely gone from this photo and any kind of brush mark is also missing.

I still have more to do. Basically, this was done as a buffer. A painting to get things started and give me ideas. I like the colors and in the end it will have more darks and details.

I really need to work on some actual pieces of art instead of just posters and sketches and album art, etc. Sam, the owner of the Visual Arts Collective, asked me when I was going to have a show at his place. Uh... seriously? It was Erin and Ben's art opening last night and their work was amazing. I don't even think I should be put into the same gallery as them. But, I keep hearing it over and over from folks. I just need to do it. I need to spend my every night painting and drawing.

One problem though. I don't know what I want to do. It isn't that I don't have ideas, I just have so many. And I have established myself with a particular medium I am most comfortable with or a subject matter. Sometimes I draw photo-realistically or from life, or times I have monsters and giant rabbits drawn in a cartoon kind of style. I need to find a happy medium. Or maybe I don't.

I have noticed I do some of my favorite things with acrylics on cardboard and chipboard. I got a giant hunk of cardboard about 4 feet across that I am just dying to paint something onto it. Maybe I will go with an animal theme and a monster theme and pull the weird stuff from my dreams.

I am doing a poster for a show on the 18th at the VaC with Sleepy Seeds, Spondee, A Seasonal Disguise and then the headliner is Brittain Ashford. I looked up some photos of Brittain and she is a very pretty girl, so I decided I wanted the poster to be a portrait of her.

Here is what I have so far, and then I am going to place it in an old photo, with the oval shaped framing.

Sadly, I wish I could have drawn more, but that doesn't mean I didn't get a lot done! I slept a lot on this trip. Drank some, but not a whole lot...well, except for 1 day of the cruise. We stopped in AMAZINGLY beautiful Victoria, BC and did a pub crawl. We made it to 6 or 7 then needed to stop. I tried to go to dinner than night (there is a dinner on the cruise that you dress nicely to and get served fancy 3 course meal.) I had to leave before dessert because I was too tired and still drunk. As you will see, I did not draw much for Victoria... other than 2 glasses of beer and some quick sketches of their visitors that greeted people coming off the ship dressed in old 1900s clothing. I bought a really expensive plush Sasquatch named Quatchi. You can learn more about him here.

it was hard drawing people without them moving too much or noticing you... this is why so many people are looking down or have their eyes closed. I got held up in at the John Wayne airport for 13 hours because Delta sucks. I don't even want to explain it here but there is a sketch of a pilot that I did to make me feel better. I ended up traveling for over 24 hours just to get from LA to Boise. I could have driven there faster.
